Make new friends but keep the old; one is silver and the other gold

This morning we went to the playground. I should really take them to the playground more often but I have to admit I don't because sometimes it is just more trouble than it is worth. Today I realized this is the easy time to take 2 kids to the playground....while one of them will stay pretty much in one place. But anyway.

Our reason for the playground visit today was to meet up with some of the parents and children from Madelyn's new school. Even though school does not start until September the parents and kids get together informally each week to hang out. We thought this would be a great way to start to meet some of the other co-op families. Madelyn had a blast with the big kids (you know her) and just jumped into the different groups as if she knew them her whole life.

There was a point where one of the moms said to her son "Hey there's Bobby! Elias, do you want to go say 'hi' to Bobby?" At that instant Madelyn leaped from the car where all the kids were playing, said, "I'll say 'hi' to Bobby!" and started running over to greet the newest arrival to the playground. (She does not know Bobby.) She is just a social butterfly. I am sure she will love school. She is already talking about her backpack. What does a preschooler really have in her backpack? I guess we will find out in September. :)

Abigail was in her own 7th heaven watching all the kids racing around. She especially loved the swings where she literally looked like she was playing.

The playground was a good idea because they are both sleeping right now. Maybe we should venture out more often. Maybe we will to meet up with our new friends, and then we can figure out who this Bobby kid is.......

The best part about today: Should happen any minute--my longtime friend, Ann, is coming for a visit from Michigan with her husband, Mike, and son, Connor (almost 11 months). I am soooo looking forward to introducing the kids and catching up on everything.

Following the leader

Today we went took a little trip to see one of my friends from high school and her two children, Brooks (3) and Amelia (7 months). She has a beautiful new house about 45 mins. - 1 hour away. Madelyn and Brooks were hysterical together. Madelyn loved having a "big kid" to follow around. Whatever Brooks did she did. As we were trying to pack up to head home (it was well past nap time!) Brooks asked for a Popsicle. Madelyn of course then wanted one too. Us moms were saying no so the kids opened the freezer to help themselves. At one point Kari thought she heard Brooks ask Madelyn grab the Popsicles (and be the fall girl) so of course she tried. It is times like that when you want to laugh but know you can't because that could be first step to becoming a "walked all over" parent. It was fun though...they had the baby pool out which of course then girls were all about that. Abby was trying to pull herself up to the pool and flop in. Madelyn was splashing around, filling buckets and water cans and brooks was throwing every water toy he had (and a few non-toys like the water hose nozzle and a basket) in the pool and Madelyn loved it all. I would have taken some photos today---there were so many great shots---but I never had a free hand to snap them. So I guess they will just have to remain the images in my head of all the fun we had today.

The best part about today: We picked up the week's worth of produce and boy what a treat! Strawberries, lettuce, tomatoes, apples, zucchini, yellow squash, mushrooms, grapefruit---we are so set for another healthy week, all for $10!

Friends vs. Ice cream

I was not sure Madelyn liked anything more than she likes ice cream but apparently "friends" win out. Or so we found out last night. We went for an after-dinner treat to a local ice cream hot spot. I have never seen Madelyn put her shoes on and motivate so quickly as when she heard the magic two words, ice cream. Too bad I can't always use that trick to get us out the door.

When we got there there several children were there also (many were fellow MOMs Club friends) and already whooping it up. We reminded Madelyn of the reason for our mission, ice cream, and successfully corraled her to the counter. After picking up our coveted treats we proceeded to the field-like area where so many others were already gathered. That last about 10 seconds. Madelyn exclaimed she was "all done!" after one bite and off she went to run with the pack.

Abigail would have gladly taken over from there. Her new crawling skills are taking her where she wants to go and she is quick to grab the good stuff as we all know.

One thing that has become very clear to me recently, Madelyn is definitely a joiner, especially if the older kids are leading the way. We better watch who her friends are because she will eagerly do whatever the group is doing---whether it is good or bad.

Last night, while she could have been eating ice cream, she was bowing down to the older girls who were apparently mighty princesses, balancing on a log and throwing dirt from one pile to another (it ended up being bath night after all because after the Dirtfest, she looked like Pigpen from the Peanuts...cloud of dirt and all!)

Of course as soon as we got back in the car, we heard....."ice cream?"

What does a SAHM do all day?

I received this from a friend of mine. I did not see it because, well, I am just the kind of "busy" mom she is talking about but I guess this was a Dear Carolyn column. Well I love it and it is SO true..........thanks for sticking up for SAHMs, Dear Carolyn.

Dear Carolyn: Best friend has child. Her: exhausted, busy, no time for self, no time for me, etc. Me (no kids): Wow. Sorry. What'd you do today? Her: Park, play group . . . Okay. I've done Internet searches, I've talked to parents. I don't get it. What do stay-at-home moms do all day? Please no lists of library, grocery store, dry cleaners . . . I do all those things, too, and I don't do them EVERY DAY. I guess what I'm asking is: What is a typical day and why don't moms have time for a call or e-mail? I work and am away from home nine hours a day (plus a few late work events) and I manage to get it all done. I'm feeling like the kid is an excuse to relax and enjoy -- not a bad thing at all -- but if so, why won't my friend tell me the truth? Is this a peeing contest ("My life is so much harder than yours")? What's the deal? I've got friends with and without kids and all us child-free folks get the same story and have the same questions.
Tacoma, Wash.

***** Carolyn's response:
Relax and enjoy. You're funny.

Or you're lying about having friends with kids. Or you're taking them at their word that they actually have kids, because you haven't personally been in the same room with them.

Internet searches?

I keep wavering between giving you a straight answer and giving my forehead some keyboard. To claim you want to understand, while in the same breath implying that the only logical conclusions are that your mom-friends are either lying or competing with you, is disingenuous indeed.

So, since it's validation you seem to want, the real answer is what you get. In list form. When you have young kids, your typical day is: constant attention, from getting them out of bed, fed, clean, dressed; to keeping them out of harm's way; to answering their coos, cries, questions; to having two arms and carrying one kid, one set of car keys, and supplies for even the quickest trips, including the latest-to-be-declared-essential piece of molded plastic gear; to keeping them from unshelving books at the library; to enforcing rest times; to staying one step ahead of them lest they get too hungry, tired or bored, any one of which produces the kind of checkout-line screaming that gets the checkout line shaking its head.

It's needing 45 minutes to do what takes others 15.

It's constant vigilance, constant touch, constant use of your voice, constant relegation of your needs to the second tier.

It's constant scrutiny and second-guessing from family and friends, well-meaning and otherwise. It's resisting constant temptation to seek short-term relief at everyone's long-term expense.

It's doing all this while concurrently teaching virtually everything -- language, manners, safety, resourcefulness, discipline, curiosity, creativity. Empathy. Everything.

It's also a choice, yes. And a joy. But if you spent all day, every day, with this brand of joy, and then, when you got your first 10 minutes to yourself, wanted to be alone with your thoughts instead of calling a good friend, a good friend wouldn't judge you, complain about you to mutual friends, or marvel how much more productively she uses her time. Either make a sincere effort to understand or keep your snit to yourself.

Opening day at the pool

Memorial Day also typically marks the opening of the pool and we went to our favorite pool (ie my parents house) for an opening day extravaganza (ie a bbq and a swim). Both the girls LOVED the water. Madelyn remembered all her swimming skills from last year and was quickly turning circles and motoring around with the help of her safety jacket. Abigail literally cried when we took her out. She was splish-splashing all around and standing by the side of the pool. Looks like we have a couple fish on our hands.

Also, as of today Abigail is 9 months old! Poor little girl now has rug burns on her arms and legs from all the motoring around. I guess she will have to either get knee and elbow pads or start wearing pants and long sleeves. Madelyn was lucky to start crawling in the cooler months I guess. Well soon enough I am sure she will be walking---yikes! Abby is getting to be such a big girl. We can hardly believe it. She was showing off her teeth today during dinner:

The best part about today: Having some quality family time

Memorial Day

Usually on Memorial Day I am focused on the day off or the unofficial start of summer but today I really did take some time to think and pray. The girls were decked out in their patriotic best and we really do thank all the many men and women who fight for our country, whether or not the causes are just in our eyes.

We have a few friends that are currently serving overseas. I am sure I have mentioned our neighbor Pat is in Iraq right now. For the longest time if you asked Madelyn where Patrick was she'd say "on an airplane." Long flight, yes, but not that long! Recently her answer is he's in ("Rrrack") and when you ask what he is doing there she will say "being a good boy." We told her he is serving our country and being a good boy so it is the last part she held on to. So to Patrick and everyone else over there, thanks for being such a good boy (and girl) and serving our country.

To all our troops and everyone serving overseas, please stay safe and know we are praying for you to hurry home to your families.

BBQ with the KD "family"

In case you did not know I was in a sorority (Kappa Delta) in college. Judge if you want to but it was not like anything you see in the movies---with hazing, excessive partying, etc. It was great and many of the friends I made I am still really close to. I had a "big sister" and she had a "big sister" and so on that made up what we called a "family." These girls I have been particularly close to, especially my big sister Kim, who I see pretty much once a week. Anyway. Most of the rest of the "family" got together this afternoon for a bbq here. It was a little wild since there were 8 kids (all 5 and under) and 8 adults but everyone got along well and had a super time. Hopefully we can get together again soon. Just for fun I brought out some old photos of us from college. Sorry for the bad quality but here is a retro-photo (circa 1995 though it looks way more antique than that!) from a 20's party we all attended. Ah, the gold old days. Four of the five were here today with their kiddos.

Now we are all grown up and have traded the drinking games for Candyland. (Seriously, we busted out the Candyland this afternoon!) It was hazy, hot and humid today but the kids enjoyed the new swing set.

At dinner time the kids all crowded on to the picnic table. They had found the birthday hats and were all excited to wear them. Okaaaay. As it turns out one of the little boys will be 2 tomorrow so we celebrated his birthday---I guess it was his first surprise party!

All of the sudden the clouds got very dark and the wind blew like something out of The Wizard of Oz so we all raced inside the house. Some of the little ones were scared with all the frenzy. Two of the kids, our storm chasers, asked if I could turn the news on to make sure there was not a tornado coming.

Madelyn was unfazed by the excitement, she and Noah were more focused on finishing their dessert.
The best part about today: (besides the bbq and connecting with old friends) We slept in...until a little after 7 a.m. WOW.

Sleep babies sleep

This time of night is really one of my favorite times of the day. Not just because the children are quiet and finally the house is sort of clean. But because when they are sleeping they are just so precious. Even if they are snoring or in a funny position, that last check in on them before I go to bed is so touching to me. Maybe that is weird. But surely I am not the only parent who finds pure joy in watching their sleeping child(ren). I really do look forward to that every night. And every night as I come into our room, I marvel to Kevin about this very thing.

The best part about today: I went to a baby shower this afternoon with some old friends and for the gift I had made a diaper cake....I was so proud and the mom-to-be loved it! I told her the 88 diapers I had rolled up and stacked to look like a cake might get her through the first few days. hahahahahaha.

Movin' right along

Well I would say it is official now, Abigail is on the move! She's a top notch army crawler as of today. It was really fun to watch her really want something so bad that she just finally said, "what the heck, I am going to get it!" She's not very quick yet (so she won't be winning any baby races yet) but I am sure the speed is coming soon. We kind of have to baby proof all over again. It's amazing how many things can be hazardous to a little girl on the go but there is plenty.

Speaking of getting into things, Abby also had her first taste of cupcake today. Whoops! (She loooved it of course.)

But this is what happened. We went to a cupcake party/playdate where all the kids decorated their own cupcakes and then had time to run off all that extra sugar while the moms visited. Win-win. Madelyn made an extra cupcake to take home. Fine. So I did my usual juggle of too many things---kids, bag and the cupcake---to get into the house. So there I am balancing all this and trying to get the key in the door (which is a little tricky anyway because the lock is so old!) and guess who took a fist full of the cupcake? Not just a dainty little swipe but a FIST FULL of cake and icing. I'm yelling, "No, Abby" and trying to pull her hand away from the cake. Madelyn bursts into tears as her sister takes another fist full. I of course cannot open the door because now the lock is covered with icing. Madelyn is collapsed on the step, crying. Abby I have to say is pretty happy though as she sucks the life out of her fists. To make matters worse my neighbor was having some tree limbs cut so I am not sure if they noticed the commotion (don't know how they could not have) but the workers were I am sure enjoying this show. We finally got inside and I washed Abby's hands. Of course then she was crying. Madelyn's cupcake was pretty much mushed but she did get a few more crumbs and high praise for "sharing" so nicely with her sister.

The best part about today: We all took an afternoon nap...and were ready and rarin' to go for afternoon playtime with some neighbor friends.

100th post

Wow, this is my 100th post already! That is something.

We are back from Atlanta and getting back into our routines. Jumped right back in today! I had a late night last night---I was out and about in Catonsville on a MOMS Club scavenger hunt. (Soooo fun!)

But we started early today because we had to go pick up our first share of the produce co-op. What a cool thing that is. We got a huge box of fruits and vegetables for $10. I love it! Madelyn even helped me snap the green beans this afternoon....Abby "helped" too by sitting on my lap and sucking on a green bean. It was kind of a cute moment. But I am really excited about the idea of having a week's worth of fresh, local produce.

After the produce pick-up we had to rush back because we hosted playgroup here today. In some ways it is nice to host. One big thing is for the first half of playgroup Abigail was asleep upstairs in her room and I had the monitor on my belt buckle. It was a gorgeous day so we had our first trial of the new play set. I will say it might need some tightening.....there was a point when two big kids (4 year olds) and two babies (under 1) were swinging that the set was rocking. It held up well though and was a big hit. I did forget to take a photo of the whole set because we now have the roof on and it looks really great! I did take a few photos of the playgroup fun at least.

But playgroups can be hard, especially when there are a lot of kids and moms. I never feel like I get to talk to anyone (playgroups are really for the mommies!) Madelyn tends to get a little overwhelmed I think. It's right around the hour and a half mark she starts to fall apart and the hitting, etc. comes out. Plus by that time Abby was up and I had her in my arms the whole time, which leads to some minor jealousy issues I am noticing. If playgroup is someone else's house of course we can (and do) just leave but when everyone was here it was hard to be like, "okay, we're going to pieces here...the party is over." It's a great group of neighborhood friends so we do try to keep in the loop.

The best part about today: Having fresh green beans and grilled plums with our dinner.

Tales from the road

Greetings from Atlanta! We are having a fabulous time! The girls are all off schedule but other than that this trip is just peachy. I guess they are finally worn out because amazingly right now Madelyn and Abby are both taking a nap. (It's gotten pretty ugly when naps are skipped.) So I thought I'd take a few moments to document some of the highlights of our trip thus far.

The flight was great! Thanks to the "travel treat bag" and the DVD player we stayed pleasantly occupied and managed not to annoy the other passengers. We borrowed this contraption from one of our neighbors to make taking Madelyn (and her car seat) through the airport easily. We are so going to purchase one of these for ourselves...THUMBS UP!

We arrived to a gorgeous Georgia Saturday, got the rental car and headed over to Jason and Kelly's apartment. First on the agenda was lunch with Kelly's sister, Kerry, and brother-in-law, Jake. We went to this wild pizza place called the Mellow Mushroom. Yeah, we ordered a pizza called the "Magical Mystery Tour"....very psychedelic. We stopped by Kerry and Jake's house also to meet their dog, Casey and check out their new Wii. Fun! Madelyn loved the bowling and with Kevin's help, beat me by 4 points. Consequently, my score at 100, was better than any real bowling score I have ever gotten. Maybe I should stick to virtual sports.

We came back to Jason and Kelly's apartment to meet their dog, Rockne. He just celebrated his first (7th!) birthday. He has been greeting along great with the kids but perhaps has gotten a little bit more worn our than usual---they are a good match for energy!

Hi Rockne (aka "Rocky")

We tried to put the girls down for naps but that did not happen. Madelyn, we learned the hard way, can crawl out of the pack n' play now. Whoops. Once she was out of course Abby did not want to rest. Oh well, early bedtime it would be then. We went to mass where Jason and Kelly were married (3 years ago next week!) That was really cool. The last time we were at the church I was just a few months pregnant with Madelyn. Wow, a lot has happened since then. She sure was easier to take care of then!

One Sunday we went to the new Georgia Aquarium. WOW! What a great time.

Checking out the sea nettles Waves were crashing overhead
Holy moly! That's a big fish!
On the shrimp boat

Naps were a bust yesterday afternoon also, after all the aquarium excitement. Kelly organized a really fun fish craft that everyone (kids and adults) really got into.

Getting crafty!

Here we are to today. Jason had to work but Kelly took the day off and we went to the Children's Museum. As soon as we entered the museum it was a total free for all. A child's dream day! It was a very hands on experience and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Fishing in the water

Playing in the non-sand sand box

Abby in the "garden"

Madelyn on TV with Elmo
Here we are on Sesame Street
After the museum we met Jason for lunch and stopped to check out his office. Madelyn tried the fancy lawyer's office chair and thought about doing some work...

The best part about the trip so far: Hard to decide because everything is top notch---the accommodations, the excursions, the food, the weather...... A ++++.

Off to Santa

So this weekend we are going to Atlanta to see my brother, Jason, and his wife, Kelly, and their dog, Rockne. If you ask Madelyn where we will going, she says to "Santa" to see Uncle Jason, Aunt Kelly and their dog, "Rocky." Close.

I am embarrassed to admit we have not been to Atlanta since their wedding 3 years ago. Eeeps. I know they understand. I was just barely pregnant with Madelyn then so it has been a busy 3 years for us.

But we are really looking forward to the trip.

Traveling with children is so much different. Kevin and I have always been a fairly "on the go" couple. We dated long distance for 10 months so I guess that says something. But travel is different than it was for us. I mean those days you could wait at the gate for someone to arrive and you could take a bottle of mouthwash in your carry-on.

You would not believe the stuff that we have to take. I really should have been packing all week long but it is just so daunting. Everything but the kitchen sink it seems like needs to come with us. I mean it's not like we are going to a foreign country.... (My mom's joke.)

We never used to check bags. (Now we always do and we check the maximum we can take.)
We used to bring magazines or books to read on the plane. (Now we are loaded down with Elmo books and DVDs.)
We used to take a nap on the plane. (Now we just hope the kids do.)
We used to enjoy an in-flight soda or juice and snack. (Now things get spilled.)

So things are different. But we also never got to pre-board and that is a definite bonus. We like to travel though and hope to have children who do also. Like everything else it's all in the training.

The best part about today: We took a family walk after dinner. I would not say everyone was totally into in (Abby!) but it was nice to be out and about on such a pleasant evening.

Up for the challenge

I've had a couple challenging days....I don't know exactly what happened but.....

Madelyn is definitely in a "terrible two" stage. Everything is "NO!" (even if she means "yes") and lots of collapsing into tears over the smallest things. Mothers of girls told me there would be drama raising girls. I guess this is the start of it.

Then you have Abby who cries when you put her down (for a nap or just for a second.) Not just tears but the big, crocodile tears that just roll down her little face. Aren't second children supposed to just occupy themselves?

So I've logged many walking hours this week. Yesterday I did two laps around the neighborhood in the morning and four laps at night. (I think it is about a mile around the whole neighborhood so that is not bad.) I signed up for this walking challenge though so I am making my virtual trek from Alaska to Hawaii (emphasis on the virtual) to release the stress.

To make matters worse Abby has been waking up at 2 a.m. to eat the past couple nights. Growth spurt? Either way, it is a pain. So I am tired too.

But there have been some bright spots also, of course. Abby has developed this adorable laugh. I wish I could get it on tape. It is a cross between a "Beavis" kind of laugh and a purr. It is so adorable and I will keep the camera rolling to get it. She is also trying to stand I think. I cannot believe how strong her legs are. She is trying to walk if we stand above her holding her hands. They are very big, awkward steps but she is trying. I wonder if she will be an early walker? Who knows. Someone at playgroup today was telling me her daughter was walking at 8 months and was doing the thing Abby is now doing at 6 months. Well la-dee-da. (I will not become one of those mothers.)

One of the greatest things so far with having the two children is when they entertain one another. Today in the car, on the way home from the store, I swear they were sharing some sort of inside joke. They do this sometimes at the dinner table too. It is so funny to hear them laughing back and forth. I just love that!

Well like anything there are ups and downs I suppose. If nothing else I am surely getting the activity points....though I have had several "treats" too!

The best part about today: My mom and I are off to pick up my brother at the airport in a little bit...he has an interview tomorrow in Baltimore. I would SO love to have him and Kelly live here! Fingers crossed.

Passssssing it on

Yes I have indeed already passed on my completely irrational fear of snakes to one of my children (Abby might have been scared too had she been awake). Today we went to on of the things on our circuit of activities, this "playdate" at the trader Joe's shopping center. Today was Animal Adventure day. There was a cute furry rabbit, a prickly hedgehog (with a really cute face), a squishy-looking group of three toads, a sweet turtle and of course TWO snakes. I tried to stay cool, calm and collected and loudly emphasize how neat this was but she saw right through me. You can almost see the blur of her pink bow as Madelyn went running from the first snake as our neighbor friend Jake grins with the excitement.

Then the children got to hold the second, bigger snake. Madelyn had her hands out the whole time until the handler was about to pass it off then she bolted, just as I was doing in my mind.

Sorry girls, I will try to be better. :)

The best part about today: It was a perfect weather day so we spent most of it outside--walking around the neighborhood and playing in the backyard. I love this weather...sunny, warm, breezy and zero humidity. Kevin and I call these Edwin McCain days.

Mother's Day Reflection

I am a boo-boo kisser, a diaper changer, a cheerleader, a back patter, a personal dresser, a safety checker, a food dicer, a mini-van driver, a hopeful soul. I am a mom. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to really believe it. Ever since I can remember I knew I wanted to be a mom. In many ways, I'd say it has always been my dream job. Though calling it a job makes it sound too technical or something, it really is a vocation, a calling. When God made me He made me be fill this role. I am so blessed and it is days like today when I have the time to really reflect on what a tremendous gift motherhood is.

I am not alone in receiving this amazing gift. Whether their children are little or grown up, born or unborn, in their arms or in heaven, others have been touched by the grace and beauty of motherhood.

Every mom is her own unique self and the kind of mom she is comes from a variety of sources. I think it is only appropriate to thank some of the people who have helped mold the kind of mom I am today.

Thank you to my own mother who set a perfect example for how a mother should be. I wish I had taken better mental notes over the last 31 years. If even just some of it sunk in, I think I will do alright. Happy Mother's Day!

Thank you to my mother-in-law who raised such a wonderful son that grew to be my dear husband. Of course I could not be as good of a mom without him so thanks for giving him a solid foundation. Happy Mother's Day!

Thank you to my friends who are mothers because each and every one of you help me to be a better mom. We chat, we swap stories, we compare notes. We support in each other in all the ups and downs motherhood brings. Happy Mother's Day!

In some ways I am a different person now that I am a mom. Looking past the stretched out tummy (that I really do hope will go back someday) it's really more about my heart. I wear it on the outside now. I worry much more about the world and all of the dangers in it. I have more motivation to kick my bad habits, to eat well, to think before I act, to respect other people as individuals, to do my part to protect the environment.

I can hardly watch the news because hearing tragic stories about other people's children breaks my heart. I cannot watch The Baby Story without crying (in a good way) because it instantly takes me back to the moments Madelyn and Abigail came into this world.

I am grateful for this day and all that come. I am a proud mom and I truly thank God for this miraculous gift. My dad says every day is Mother's Day. He is probably right (as usual). Because every day we have with our children is another day to know what true happiness is. Yes, even on the days when they are driving us a little bit crazy.

Since I am both a mother and a daughter we celebrated today with my mom too, so we took a "generational" photo.

Even though I did not see the rest of you moms who have helped mold me, on this our day, you were in a special place in my heart today as well. I hope you all had a great one!

The best part about today: Being the mother of Madelyn and Abigail is certainly gift enough but I am also majorly excited to have received the gift of TiVo. ;)

Our own personal playground

This weekend was pretty much all about getting the swing set together. Way to go Kevin and crew! It was a three day project for sure, not three full days but Kevin has worked on it the last three days. There are still a few finishing touches but it is more or less ready for playing. My parents and Rob & Diana spent a good part of Saturday (and my parents were back again for much of today) getting the bulk of it together. Of course with the two little ones someone had to entertain them so it was a mix of work and child-occupying.

It all came together at 11 a.m. Saturday when our gracious helpers arrived and the 2 tons of mulch! I neglected to get a photo of the HUGE mound of mulch for the full effect but put this that was out front:

with this that was already in the back:

and that is how much mulch we got!!! Madelyn got out her rake and was trying to help spread the mulch. It is "playground quality" and apparently what the local school system uses so it should be safe for the play surface. And one less area of grass to cut! It actually smelled pretty good also...like pine. In my opinion it looks really great. It was a major effort and we are sooo appreciative of all the help!

Here is a bit of a recap in photos.........

Kevin and Rob, getting started

How we left it last night:

The youngest members of the work crew taking a free ride

At the end of today....just about done and looking like lots of fun!

We can hardly wait to get out there and enjoy it. I think we are supposed to have a pretty nice week weatherwise so you know where we will be....

Amusing Thursday

Today was a fairly regular Thursday for us...we went to the story time at the mall. There we met up with Kim & Lola, Natalie & Tadhg and randomly saw a friend from my New Mom's Group when I was a "new mom" with Madelyn. We have not see her in at least a year and a half. So there I am with my double stroller and two kids, and I'm like, "so what have you been up to?" :)

We had a nice time. Madelyn was a dancing machine. She tried to get a dancing circle going with Lola, Tadhg and Abigail but she was easily drawn to the other circles of jumping, spinning, jiggling children and soon wandered around, looking to break into other circles of dancing preschoolers. It was pretty funny! She tells me she made some new friends. OK. We took the mandatory (according to Madelyn) stop to see the animals in the pet shop window and spin on the carousel, of course to everyone's amusement but my own. I have no idea why going on that makes me feel so queasy.

It was a beautiful, though humid already!, day but sadly we did not get out to enjoy much of it. Abby was worn out by all the dancing and took an extra long nap. So Madelyn "helped" me with the laundry. I have to go re-do her "work" now.... I really do not understand how such little people can be so destructive. Don't they crave some order for things?

Kevin just left to go pick up the swing set. Yay! So that is what we will be doing this weekend.

The best part about today: The sing-a-long at the mall---I always love that kind of thing. Thank goodness I finally have children to share it with!

Secret Agent Mama

Ah, yes, did you know I am now a secret agent? Well sort of. Tonight I was a mystery diner at The Cheesecake Factory. Yummy, do I love that place. A fellow MOMS Club friend told me about this and you can do it too! This company, Mystery Guest Inc., can hook you up. You have to fill out an application but it is pretty easy to do. Then they will call to "interview" you and give you your first assignment. After your visit you have to fill out a fairly detailed survery. But hello, almost free dinner at The Cheesecake Factory! If you have a CF near you I really recommend this. Plus you really do feel like a secret agent. :) Tonight I picked up a "To Go" order and it was awesome.

So the evening definitely ended well but the day was not at all bad either. Today we went to the MOMS Club Mother's Day extravagant. It was good to be a MOM today, I tell you. They had a nice brunch for the moms and kids and tons of prizes!!! I walked out of there with a $5 gift certificate to Starbucks, a Mary Kay microderm abrasion kit, a baby hand casting kit and an adorable hand painted paper towel holder. Holy moly! Plus it was a great time. Poor Madelyn was a little scared because when we walked in (late!) the games had begun and everyone was shouting and carrying on. Her response was, "pick me up!" I am sure she was very confused by all the goings on. Abigail of course loved all the action. The second part of the event I had volunteered to sit in the nursery (the kids go there generally while the moms meet---total win-win.) They both really loved that. Abby was checking out a new exersaucer-type toy and Madelyn found her own little baby doll to play with. It was funny because one of the older boys was roughhousing a bit and he had crawled up on top of the playhouse roof. As he slid down he was about to hit the bassinet Madelyn's baby was in (all wrapped up in a blanket of course!) Madelyn was like a protective little mommy as she scooped the baby doll up to shield her from the leaping 4-year-old. Too cute!

All in all a superb day! It's that time again....Dunmore Women's Group so I submitted my survey for The Cheesecake Factory and I am off to catch up on the neighborhood news.

The best party about today: Celebrating motherhood with some of my fellow moms. It really is a great gift!!! (Ha, I usually try to extend my birthday now I am also trying to extend Mother's Day by celebrating on more than one day!)

Malling around

Going to the mall is a whole new experience with kids. Long gone are the days of sauntering around perusing the latest fashions. Nope, going to the mall with kids is more like grab whatever you see first and hope it is the best price because there is not time for comparison shopping. Also, I have to think about which shopping center to go to so I can get everything done without getting the girls in and out of the car seats more than once. My least favorite are the shopping centers that have everything you need but it is not easy to walk from place to place. What is the point??? (I am clearly married to an urban planner!) But seriously. I wanted to get a walk in and allow Madelyn some time to run around. Yes, trying to do it all but that's what I do. Actually things worked out pretty well. We got our errands done though there was plenty more shopping I wanted to do. We visit with Kim & Lola and (to my wonderful surprise) ran into Kara, her mom, Woody & Cooper. Everyone was so content that by the time I pulled into my driveway at 11:30 am or so, both girls were fast asleep.

The best part about today: Kevin had his Notre Dame Club meeting tonight so my parents stopped by. It's always nice to have a few extra hands around at the end of the day and around bedtime.

Shoe crazy!

I took the girls shoe shopping this afternoon. Seems like a fun thing to do with your daughters. Well one of them loved it, the other one, not so much. Madelyn was like one of the girls in Sex and the City. Seriously ooh'ing and ahh'ing and pulling as many pairs off the shelf as possible. Abigail was very uninterested. Perhaps it was because we were not shopping for her. At any rate as Madelyn is pulling box after box out to try on, Abigail is starting to get cranky. Finally in order to help Madelyn try on the Dora shoes she is all jumping up and down for, I had Abby this little Dora cutout. It was the cover of a cereal box that had a second life in our house as a "puppet." What a ghetto toy but they loved it! Anyway I was focusing on Madelyn for a while and Abby was being quiet, suspiciously quiet. Well sure enough the next thing I know Dora's hand is missing. Sure enough Abby had it stuck to the roof of her mouth. That girl! So I hope cereal boxes are okay to nibble on. She didn't swallow any of it but I am sure she got a good taste. Madelyn was so distraught over Dora's amputated hand we left the store without any shoes.

ANOTHER funny Abigail story today...as previously mentioned Kevin took the day off today (yay!). When he got back from the MVA he took Madelyn to the playground for a little bit before lunch. Abby stayed with me and I took my shower, etc. She was playing so nicely as I made lunch and having a grand old time. Minutes later Kevin and Madelyn returned. I was in the kitchen, with my eyes off Abby for a second. Kevin said "what's Abby doing?" I replied, "playing on the carpet" and he said, "Ummm, I don't think so...." That little girl had fallen asleep laying right in the middle of the living room on the carpet. That would make a great add for the soft, new carpet! It was so funny. She was out. It could not have been a minute ago that she was just playing. Narcoleptic maybe? I tried to move her into her bed but she clearly would have preferred to sleep on the floor.

The best part about today: The girls went to bed early (Madelyn's request) and Kevin and I had a nice, relaxing dinner on the deck.

Super Sunday

We had another busy and fun weekend. I meant to post this last night (Sunday) but I had fallen asleep on the couch (one of my bad habits!!) and when I finally crawled into bed I remembered I completely forgot to blog.

Sunday was a great day.

Kevin got up EARLY to make it to his race. The run (a 10K) across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge was cancelled at the very last minute due to the high winds yesterday. He was literally on the shuttle bus to take him to the start line. So back he came and was home in time to join us at our regular mass time. I told you he got up early....

Yesterday afternoon we had yet another birthday party in the neighborhood. Our friend across the street turned 4 and had his big party yesterday. They rented this huge bounce house for lots of jumping fun! Madelyn could see it from her bedroom window before she went down for her nap. So when she woke up, she was like, "OK, I am ready to play!" It was so big we all could jump in it. Abigail was just amazed by the whole thing. It was fun and I will also count it as my daily workout. ;)

Kevin took the day off today because unfortunately he lost his license at the race. So he is going to the MVA in a few minutes and we will get about our day.
Catch you later!

The best part about yesterday: Bouncing around in the inflatable castle.

Party time, excellent

What a busy and very fun Saturday we have had! We went to the elementary school's spring fair today. It was great! It was a neat glimpse into the future though as I was talking to someone I realized we will not have a kindergartner for 4 more years. HA! Fine by me, it just sounds kind of far away. Amazingly we knew several people there---it seems like half our neighborhood was there today. Madelyn was so cute how she stood in line behind the big kids with her tickets. Kevin took some pics with his new phone. I will have to get those uploaded. Her highlights would probably include the duck pond game and the balloon maker lady (Madelyn came home with her very own balloon bunny). Abigail especially loved the steel drum band's music. What a super fun family activity!

After naps we went to a neighbor's birthday party. WOW! That was something. It was a pretty nice day so they had the party outside. It was a tropical themed 1st birthday. They had a band, a margarita machine, dancing great-aunts and a very pretty fondant cake that my friend made herself. I am so impressed! The kids hit the pinata and had a blast all running around together. Got me to think about Abigail's party....

In other news, our old swing set is now gone so we have space for the new one. Madelyn was so sad to see it go. But we showed her the photo of the new one to reinforce that a better one is coming! I think we are going to buy the new set tomorrow. It might be a few weeks still until it is up because we still have to get the area ready with wood chips, etc. The yard looks so much bigger without the set though. Wow. If it all comes together like I envision it in my head, it will be a great play area.

The Bath Fitter guy came today for the final measurements so that will be in by June 7th or earlier. I am very excited to get that done also!!!

Getting Soooo big!

I really wish I had a nickle for every time someone said, "they grow up so fast." (I'd be rich!) Well I've come to find out, it is true.

Abigail's growth is the most obvious. She is really close to crawling I think. It seriously could be any day now. She does this adorable thing: on her tummy, arms and legs out and just shakes back and forth just like she was on a vehicle that was out of gas. It's as if she's saying, "c'mon, move!" She can also get up on her hands and knees but then just flops down. I guess she has not put it all together. That is fine by me! I like to put her down and know she will stay there. It comes in handy when chasing down my other little girl.

The other thing Abby is learning is "so big!" It's pretty funny. She does not exactly do it on command but it sure seems like she is getting it. Here she is:

It's pretty funny because we can be at the dinner table and out of the blue Abby raises her arms and of course we all clap. She must think we are a bunch of nuts!

It has taken me 8 months I guess but lately I have been feeling more settled into the routine of having two.

The best part about today: We went to a Cinco de Mayo party this morning and made pinatas with other MOMS Club friends.

S-s-s-scared

I am scared of snakes. Petrified. I have trouble seeing a snake on the television or at the zoo, both of which would be behind glass. Right now I am getting goosebumps just thinking about the slithery suckers. For years I have clapped my hands like a goofball in dark or grassy areas in order to scare any snakes off, even in places where clearly there are no snakes. It just freaks me out that they move without arms and legs. That hiss and the little flickering tongue, it all freaks me out. Shutter!

This afternoon we went over to check out our neighbors' new swing set. We are also in the market for a new set for our backyard so we went give theirs a spin. On the way down the steps to the new set, my eagle eye noticed, curled up in the ivy along the railing, a little snake. I literally leaped off the step, Abigail in my arms. Madelyn was luckily down below or I seriously might have knocked her over. I try to stay calm, for the children, but I am embarrassed to say I was all jittery. I could not enjoy the playtime and kept thinking something was crawling over my feet.

At one point my neighbor was about to point out that Abby spit up a little bit and I jumped and probably shook Abby up even more.

I really don't want to pass this fear on to my kids. I have already been looking over my shoulder in our own yard so this is not good. There are only two kinds of poisonous snakes in Maryland, I am sure none live in Dunmore. I know they don't want to be near me either but this is one creature I sure could do without.

In better news, we had a delightful dinner guest tonight. Dave Shepard was in town from Seattle for a speaking engagement. Now if we can just see those adorable Shepard children again maybe we will not miss them as much.

The best part about today: Our morning playdate that featured fun on a snake-free, super fun play set with my college friend Erin and her children. (Madelyn was all about the tire swing!)

I got a raise!

Don't get me wrong I am not complaining about my job, it's the best I have ever had. If only I were paid in actual money for it...... According to an article on Yahoo! news if SAHMs were paid, we'd be up to a $138,095 a year earning potential. As Jerry Maguire said, "show me the money!"

Wild and wacky Wednesday

Now here we are back to today. Today was a great day! Did you know it was 31 cent scoop night at Baskin Robbin? Eek! I am really. Madelyn would not even have known the difference but it seemed like a good thing to take her to. Just imagine the blue mouth and hands! For some reason she is into blue ice cream these days. Oooookay!

We got our early morning walk in and managed (as usual!) to run into some neighbors. The neighborhood playgroup was off to the petting zoo today but we decided to skip it. Abby had a nap and Madelyn and I did paper mache. With Cinco de Mayo this week what fun it will be to have a pinata! HA! We'll see. Madelyn is not one to like to get her hands very dirty so she was not all into the goopey-paper mache thing. She was more into directing me where to put the next strip of paper. I had the camera out but my hands were so messy I didn't get a single snapshot. We'll see how it turns out.

After Abby woke up we went over to a neighbor's house for a brief playdate. They are in the neighborhood playgroup also but, like us, decided juggling a 2-year-old and a baby might be a bit too much. Right now we are the only two moms with two little ones but more new babies are on the way so soon everyone will be in the same boat.

It was the first time in a long time but this afternoon, we all slept! How weird. I guess it was just all catching up with me. I got absolutely nothing done of course but I guess I needed the siesta. We were all refreshed and read for some outdoor fun this afternoon.

The best part about today: Catching up on some computer time!

Tuesday

The carpet installers came just before 8 a.m. but it all worked out great because Abby was up and almost ready to go back down for a nap when Madelyn just woke up. That never happens but it worked out well with so many other things going on.

I was pleased to find out under the old carpet was an icky linoleum-type floor. I was nervous there might be some pretty wood flooring or something we might not want to cover over. I guess we are still getting used to the new carpet. It is neutral but a little different. It is apparently some new "in" thing that is popular out in trend-setting California. Honestly it's a cross between a shag and berber. But it's soft and cushy and apparently pretty stain resistant. The girls love playing on it and that is really what we were going for.

After the carpet install, we headed out to a nearby shopping center for an outdoor kids' "rock" concert. It was pretty rockin'...at 10:30 a.m. and all. Madelyn was dancing up a storm with the pother pint-size concert-goers. Very cute! Plus since it was right in front of Trader Joe's we got a balloon too. Oh happy day!

The best part about Tuesday: Our afternoon neighborhood walk and an early (before 9 p.m. I think) bedtime!

Monday

Monday we were scheduled to have the carpet in the family room replaced so we planned to stick around while we waited in the all day window for installation. It was fine though because as I have said before I do not mind some days doing nothing. It was a busy weekend, the girls slept in a bit, we got our walk in and just played at home.

At around 2:30 p.m. our friendly sales rep. called to see if the carpet could be installed the next morning. {Funny since this company's claim to fame is their next day installation and now we are already on Day 3 since we purchased the carpet.} Yeah, sure, whatever. They'd be here first thing in the morning.

So after naps (yes, Abigail is now taking an afternoon nap most afternoons---yay!) we raced around town cramming in as many errands as we could. The girls were real troopers. We had to get them fed and in bed by 8 p.m. because we had an appt. with another salesperson to see about updating our bath. {I did mention we were on a home improvement kick.}

I won't go into the gory details but maybe I can sum it up by saying, our bathtub is original. While this original-ness makes it very pretty with the tile, there is 40+ years of gunk built up. It doesn't look like I ever clean it but I swear that I do. I get nervous with having the little girls around all that ickyness during tubby time. So we are going to modernize with a "Bath Fitter" and hope it maintains some of the charm without the unhealthy gunk.

The best part about Monday: We called Uncle Jeff to wish him a "happy birthday" and hearing Madelyn sing to the voice mail was just priceless to us. Hopefully Uncle Jeff did not think that was too wacky!

The Weekend

Ok, what a fake-out that was yesterday. I realized I can only spend time any real time on the computer in the evenings. Tonight I am on and since I had an almost 2-hour mid-day nap today (whoa!) I have to get all caught up on my blog, the website and my e-mails (all before Lost begins).

Here is the real weekend wrap-up.

Glamma and Grandpa were in town Friday through Sunday. Friday we relaxed and had pizza and lots of playtime! Saturday* morning we went to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. It was a bit of a whirlwind trip since we had to zip out after Abby's morning nap and get back before lunchtime/afternoon naps. But we did it and it was a great time. It was a perfect day--not to hot, not to cold! Madelyn requested the zebras so that was our first stop. We spent a good amount of time in the "children's zoo"

Look closely in the bubbles and you can see the "prairie dogs"--Madelyn and Kevin in the middle one and Grandpa Nelson in the one to left:

Daddy and Maddie walking across the "wiggly bridge"--Madelyn loved it so much she went back and forth a few times:
Madelyn in the nest:
Glamma, Grandpa, Daddy, Madelyn and Abigail (the girls are d-o-n-e with the zoo trip at this point):

One side note about Saturday*, it was our wedding anniversary. Yes, indeedy, 6 years! It is really hard for me to believe that we have been married for 6 years. It seems like our wedding day was just last year. But then again we have accomplished quite a bit since then. We've lived in three homes (two of which we have owned) in two different states and had two children. Not bad. The sixth year gifts are sugar and iron. I got Kevin a new cell phone, the Chocolate (very fancy! and gets us back up to date as far as technology), for the sugar and a set of plastic golf clubs and gift card for a day or evening golfing date for the iron. He got me two beautiful "children" charms for my charm bracelet and a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. How sweet is he? I am pretty lucky. We celebrated by going out to dinner at the place where we held the rehearsal dinner 6 years ago...and then went for drinks at the Belvedere where we had the reception. My parents surprised us there and bought us a drink! I had an Italian Surfer for old time's sake.

Sunday we made it to early (8 a.m.) church. It worked out well because after church Abby could have her morning nap and then we could head down to Fells Point to meet my parents for brunch at Kooper's. Another beautiful day and of course good company.

It's good to be grand! The girls and all four of their grandparents:

Present and accounted for

Nope, I have not completely fallen out of the blogoshpere. I have so much to write about I will probably have to do it several posts. We had a busy weekend of course and are about to embark on a few minor home improvement projects so my usual blog time has been filled with other things the past few days.

Right now it is 7:30 a.m. Abigail is awake and Jumperoo'ing right behind me. Madelyn is still asleep but I doubt for much longer. If I was smart I'd be getting ready for this morning. The time slot from 6:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. is always a bit of a circus. We have our system down though now. Today, however, we have an additional side show....we are having carpet replaced in the family room (one of the home improvement projects). They were supposed to come yesterday. After waiting around all day they had to cancel (grrrr.) But they promised to be here between 7 a.m. - 8 a.m. this morning. I agreed so we could get it going but it really is going to be a 3-ring circus. Luckily I got Abby up and fed. Even after all this time (12 months with Madelyn and now 8 months and 2 days with Abigail)...I am still not comfortable nursing around other people.

Anyway I have some great photos from the weekend and stories to boot so I will be back with more posts. The time is ticking before the flurry begins.

The best part about the morning: Abby and I are up, dressed and fed---WOW!
